چکیده

This paper makes seven recommendations to HCI researchers wishing to construct Fitts’ law models for either movement time prediction, or for the comparison of conditions in an experiment. These seven recommendations support (and in some cases supplement) the methods described in the recent ISO 9241-9 standard on the evaluation of pointing devices. In addition to improving the robustness of Fitts’ law models, these recommendations (if widely employed) will improve the comparability and consistency of forthcoming publications. Arguments to support these recommendations are presented, as are concise reviews of 24 published Fitts’ law models of the mouse, and 9 studies that used the new ISO standard. r 2004 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

A Literature Survey on Fitts’ Law and its Applications

The way of pointing a target object and the movement time of the pointer lead to a challanging problem in HCI. A large number of seminal paper have been proposed towards this. Moreover, the HCI community uses few formulas, and are related to Fitts’ law. Few are derived from Shannon’s information theory. This paper introduces a survey on Fitts’ law and its derivatives. Finally, we study the vari...

Calculation of Totally Optimized Button Configurations Using Fitts' Law

This paper addresses the problem of optimal placement and configuration for a set of buttons on a graphical user interface (GUI). We present an optimization algorithm that reduces the average time necessary for pointing device motions. Fitts’ law (Fitts 1954) is used to estimate the transfer time for cursor movements between buttons. Numerous studies in the literature focus on the verification ...

Speed-accuracy tradeoff in Fitts' law tasks-on the equivalency of actual and nominal pointing precision

accuracy trade-off in Fitts' law tasks — On the equivalency of actual and nominal pointing precision. ABSTRACT Pointing tasks in human computer interaction obey certain speed-accuracy tradeoff rules. In general, the more accurate the task to be accomplished, the longer it takes, and vice versa. Fitts' law models the speed-accuracy tradeoff effect in pointing as imposed by the task parameters, t...

Finger Pointing Accuracy on Leap Motion Sensor

In this short paper we present a performance analysis of the Leap Motion depth sensor solely used as a single finger pointing device. Based on the evaluation of Fitts’ Law, we have examined the sensor capabilities with two groups of participants – 10 moderately aged computer affine technicians and 10 elderly people with no explicit experience in handling technical devices. Results have been com...

Evaluation of Fitts’ Law Index of Difficulty Formulation for Screen Size Variations

It is well-known as Fitts’ law that the time for a user to point a target on a GUI screen can be modeled as a linear function of “index of difficulty (ID).” In this paper, the authors investigate whether the traditional ID formulation is appropriate independently of device screen sizes. Result of our experiment reveals that the ID formulation may not consistently capture actual difficulty: user...
